ETank2000 Changes - 21 Mar 2008 - 1.7.200 Release

Notes from Jeffcoat Smitt, ETank's creator and Executive Design Engineer

Overview

Beginning with Version 1.7.100 of Etank2000 contains all of the updates for API-10th Edition, Addendum 4 Section 3. This includes changes to the roof design loads and formulas, wind moment, and Appendix F. Very soon we will have the 1.7.300 release that will include the first changes for Appendix V for external pressure. Those initial App. V changes will include the roof and shell design for external pressure, doing so with the current way Etank designs stiffeners. ETank currently assumes the shell stiffeners are equally spaced on the transposed shell. The full implementation of App V will follow with the 1.7.400 release, where you will be able to locate the stiffeners at any location and spacing desired. Etank will convert the stiffener locations back and forth between real and transposed elevations. Following that we will implement the new Appendix E for seismic design. For a complete list of changes see the 'What's New' notes, below.

Engineering Changes

There are a couple new features in this version you have to be aware of that can directly affect your design. These are both subtle changes due to Addendum 4.
  1. Operating ratio (default = 0.4): This is the ratio of the operating pressure to the design pressure. The default for API-650 formulas is 0.4. This comes from Appendix R. And should be changed only if specified by the end user.

    From API-650 Appendix R.2

    "If the ratio of operating pressure to design pressure exceeds 0.4, the purchaser should consider specifying a higher factor on design pressure in (c), (d), (e)(1), and (f)."

  2. Option for including corrosion allowance for the external pressure/ wind calcs (default = true for existing tanks, false for new tanks).

    Previously Etank did not subtract the corrosion allowance for the shell in the shell transposition & maximum height of unstiffened shell calculations. But Etank did add the corrosion allowance to the shell required thickness due to wind or external pressure. Now Etank has an option below the intermediate girder field for “Include Corrosion Allowance in t_shell_min”. If this is not checked, Etank will not include the shell corrosion allowances in either the transformation calculations or the required thickness due to external pressure or wind. If this option it checked, Etank will add the corrosion allowance to the required thickness calculation, and it will subtract it from the shell thicknesses in the transformation calculations.

    From API-650 Appendix V.5 (Corrosion Allowance)

    "Unless specified otherwise by the purchaser, the evaluation of tanks in accordance with the requirements of this appendix may be based on the as-built thickness of the pressure-resisting components, including any specified corrosion allowance."

    "If the nature of the tank service conditions is such that corrosion will result in a uniform loss of thickness of the affected components, the purchaser should specify that corrosion allowance be deducted from the as-built thickness used in the evaluation."

What's New in this version of ETank?

Below are listed the changes made in 1.7.2, 1.7.1, and 1.7.0 versions of ETank 2000.

1.7.2

47) REP FIX: t-Calc2 in Girder calculations rounded to 4 digits, to satisfy SUMMARY REPORT assertion.

48) REP CHG: Changed report text in App F. routine, for selecting F.6 calculations.

49) REP FIX: Now the report correctly leaves out P_F42 when limiting Roof MAWP, since it's not applicable for F.6 net uplift frangible roof tanks.

50) REP FIX: ETank wasn't displaying a warning in the Supp. Roof report, even though the Summary Report said warnings were generated and in the report.

02 Mar

50) REP FIX : removed CA from showing in report line 'D0 / [(0.866 ...

03 Mar

51) REP FIX 20080303 - Fixed 'false positive' on shell course 1 warning "Course 1 Thickness Inadequate"

07 Mar

51) CALC CHG - In nozzle simple calculations, on Available Nozzle Neck Area formula, ETank is now using stress reduction factor minimum of 1 (as it does in Detailed repad calculations with f_n).

52) CALC CHG - Made change per API-650 11th Ed., Bottom Shell course min is 1/4" for tanks with OD > 10.5 ft and <= 50 ft.

53) CALC CHG : Using double instead of long, and verifying all constants in vacuum formulas are not integers to make CFM computation more accurate.

10 Mar

54) REP FIX : Units on Required Area, shell area, and nozzle neck area calculations now shows correct units (square inches).

55) UI Change : New splash screen graphics. New background image.

1.7.1
=====

08 Nov 2007

1) Anchor Design: Add. 4 redefines the projected area of the roof, and the moment arm acting upon it. M_roof

in Wind Moment calculations shows the changes.

2) Wind Girder Design: On Comp. Ring screen, new input option for “Include Corrosion Allowance (C.A.) in

t_shell_min”

  Affected Calculations:
  a) When “Include CA” is checked on girder screen, corrosion allowance is added to t.external for each shell

course.
  b) When “Include CA” is checked on girder screen, Htr and Wtr calculations (including VeMax) use t-ca instead

of just t.

3) Bottom Design: Changes to the computation for Bottom_Area , as a result of redefining Annular Ring width

from inside Shell OD, instead of outside bottom OD. This effectively increases the computed Annular_Area.

4) Bottom Design: Annular Bottom Plate material can now be specified.

  Affected Calcuations:
  a) Seismic calculations, in particular RESISTANCE TO OVERTURNING (wl) calculation.
  b) The bottom weight calculation.
  c) S = Maximum permissible out-of-plane deflection (shell elevation measurements in re-rate mode).

  Not Affected : All these calculations remain dependent on bottom plate material:
  a) Bottom head calculations, and Weight Resisting External Vacuum (P_btm).
  b) Bottom t required due to vacuum (t-Vac).
  c) UL 142 required bottom plate thickness (t).
  d) Nozzles calculations (nozzles are assumed mounted on bottom and not on annular ring).

5) Shell: Variable Point Design Method can be used when OD >= 200ft, and when L/H <= 2. FEA Analysis is

required when tank OD >= 200 ft, and L/H > 2, so ETank will give a warning in the report, and perform VPD for

estimate of shell thicknesses only. If user specifies FEA and the tank OD is less than 200 ft, ETank will

perform One-Foot calculations as normal, with no report warnings. If user specifies FEA and the tank OD >= 200

ft, but L/H <= 2, then ETank will perform VPD calculations as normal, with no report warnings.

6) Supported Roof: Rafter width, inner spacing, and outer spacing (in FT) are rounded to 3 digits.

7) Supported Roof: Rounding Z-Req’d to 2 digits for rafters and girder design.

8) Anchor Design: Wind calculations determined a Max P given wind speed / uplift, so on summary report the

following line might be shown if Max P is calculated.

	"MAWP_WIND = Maximum Calculated Internal Pressure (due to Wind/Uplift)"

9) Comp. Rings: ETank comes with new images for compression ring details, from Figure F-2 in API-650. Use the

map below to switch tank designs in the future.
  ----------
  Old 650 to New 650 Compression Ring Details from Figure F-2.

  Old -> New
  ----------
  a   -> a
  b   -> b
  c   -> c
  d   -> d or e
  e   -> f
  f   -> g
  g   -> h
  h   -> i
  i   -> k
  ----------

10) When “Include CA” is checked on girder screen, Htr and Wtr calculations (including VeMax) use t-ca instead

of just t.

11) Tank Design: New input on Design Data screen: Operating Ratio. Caption for Operating Ratio on screen also

shows reference ‘API-650 App. R.2’

  API-650 Section R.2 states:

  "If the ratio of operating pressure to design pressure exceeds 0.4, the purchaser should
   consider specifying a higher factor on design pressure in (c), (d), (e)(1), and (f)."

  ETank uses the entered operating ratio in place of the 0.4 in the formulas using 0.4*P, internal or external.

  (a) Fluid and Internal Pressure:

  DL+F+Pi

  (b) Hydrostatic Test:

  DL+ (Ht+Pt)

  (c) Wind and Internal Pressure:

  DL+W+ 0.4Pi

  (d) Wind and External Pressure:

  DL+W+ 0.4Pe

  (e) Gravity Loads:

    1)DL+(LrorS) + 0.4Pe

    2)DL+Pe+ 0.4(LrorS)

  (f) Seismic:

  DL+F+E+ 0.1S+ 0.4Pi

12) Report: Operating Ratio disclaimer is shown on roof and wind report, when the ratio is different than 0.4.

13) Operating Ratio range allowed is 0.4 to 1.0

14) Wind Calculations 3.11.2 and 3.11.4 will show as ‘Not Applicable’ if tank does not have a flat bottom.

15) Anchor Design: The way ETank uses Minimum Liquid level has been changed. Only in re-rate mode is Min

Liquid level used. The new method is based on the Criteria 1 as specified in 3.11.2 for Design Mode.

16) Anchor Design: ETank’s input limits for Anchor Chair Design has been changed. The maximum limits now are:

Top Plate Width a – 36 in.
Top Plate Length b – 36 in.
Vert Plate Width k – 48 in.
Top Plate Thickness c – 5 in.
Bolt Eccentricity e – 12 in.
Outside Top Plate To Hole Edge f – 12 in
Distance Between Vert Plates g – 36 in.
Chair Height h – 48 in.
Vert Plate Thickness j – 5 in.

17) Resetting the Ground Snow Load Input value.

18) Anchor Chair Eccentricity Input value was being reset (since it’s based on anchor bolt circle in autocompute mode) even when autocompute was unchecked.

19) The Shell Summary table in the Summary Report in re-rate mode was improperly showing zero for t.external.

20) In re-rate mode, selecting ‘Is Hydro Test Required’, ETank was skipping calculation for t.Test.

21) MAWP_WIND was not being reset in certain cases, so a note may erroneously appear in tank summary.

22) Report: Now showing vertical and horizontal Projected Roof Areas both in roof calculations and wind moment calculations.

23) ETank was inverting the value of the flag for "API-650 App. F Calcs when Tank P=0" for saved tank files, after you re-open them.

24) Report: Invalid procedure call was generated resulting in missing statements in the Summary Report, when the flag "API-650 App. F Calcs when Tank P=0" was True.

15 Nov

25) Fix: For UL tank in re-rate mode ETank was showing t.required of zero.

26) UL-142 Update: ETank meets UL 8th edition.

16 Nov

27) Prevents input for DESIGN VACUUM or DESIGN PRESSURE that exceeds UL-142 limits.

28) Shows the MAWP and MAWV per UL-142 on summary report.

29) Shows the MAWV limit per API-650 on summary report.

15 Feb

38) Calculation fix: NetUplift case 3 (P_Uplift > W_Roof + W_Shell + W_Roof_Plates) was improperly selected.

21 Feb

39) Fixed MAWP_NAT in anchor report cannot show as negative.

40) Works with 25xxx series USB hasps

41) Bug Fix: For supported roof where roof plate t-calc for outer ring exceeds t-calc for inner ring, where final roof t-Calc should be the maximum of the ring t-Calcs.

42) Enhancement : If edits to a material are bing made in Materials Editor and user clicks X, ETank now confirms whether to update changes.

43) Enhancement : Action such as file New, file Open, file Save, and View reports are now delayed until after the validation timer is finished. This ensures changes to input data are validated and changed (if permitted) prior to the action.

44) Report : Moved t.required to one section after all Minimum Rafters calculations are completed, on Support Roof Report.

26 Feb

45) Changed method of Shell transposition calculations to resolve user tanks showing "* * Warning * * t.actual < t.required" messages on the shell thickness and stiffener.

28 Feb

46) Added note to ETank message window 'ETank Registered Hasp Not Found'.

1.7.0
=====
1) The main changes in the 1.7.0 release are in the roof load cases due to 650 Addendum 4, Appendix R.

2) The wind velocity factor has been modified to use 120mph, instead of 100, when in 650 mode.

3) Using T (Roof Load) in Nozzle Calcs, for App. J tank calcs. Nozzle Report now says "Per J.3.6.2 - Roof Nozzles and Roof Manways Require Reinforcement since Roof Load Exceeds 25 lbf/ft^2"

4) Using T (Roof Load) instead of entered LL for App. J tank, in Simple Repad Calcs.

5) Added new input (1.7.000) to roof screen: Additional Dead Load ( lbf/ft² )

6) Change: Structural Mtl set to same as Roof Plate Mtl, if the user selects supported roof type, and structural mtl is blank.

7) Change in the minimum participating area A_min calculation.

8) Fix: t_h (roof thickness minus corrosion) is used now instead of t, in P_F51 formula.

9) Fix: ETank is now able to find the common files folder, where the report converter utility is installed, independent of the regional language.
	This permits other language versions that install to a different folder name to run
	(e.g. spanish language windows might default install to C:\Arquivos de programas\Arquivos comuns\Ferone Interactive)

10) Add-on : An add-on utility (beta) is available that converts ETank report answers from English to SI units. Contact E-support for the utility installer. Run ETank and run a report. If ETank detects the report converter, a ‘Report to SI…’ button will be displayed. Click ‘Save to disk’ to save your report to disk, and then click ‘Report to SI…’ to start the Report Converter.

CUMULATIVE PATCH : This contains all the changes for prior Maintenance Releases since the 15 Nov 2005.
